It’s That Time of Year Again!

When asked what my favorite season is, I have usually put spring in dead last place, mostly because of my allergies! But as I’ve gotten older and discovered gardening, it has definitely moved up. In the past few weeks, I have been able to take small little steps into getting my garden going again, and it makes me so happy. Although we definitely aren’t ready to fully plant outside yet, I did plant some crops last month that love and can handle the cool weather. My onions, peas, cilantro, spinach, and carrots are all in the ground. I’ll take a pic soon to update the growth! They are happy and thriving and poking out of the ground!

I also started some of my summer plants inside. Because they take a little longer to grow, I started my seeds inside a few weeks ago for tomatoes and peppers (both bell peppers and jalapenos). Then today, I got everything else started-squash, cucumbers, and some flowers. I’ll direct sow my corn and several kinds of beans. I even got some luffa seeds to attempt to grow those for the first time!

I also tried something different this year and bought little seed pellets on Amazon. They fit perfectly into my growing trays I also purchased there. You just water them and they expand so you can plant your seed. So easy!

My garden plan is ready, and I have a few boxes to finish cleaning out. I also have a few to build as I am expanding my garden by just a few more boxes this year. I just need to be patient and wait until the end of April to get everything planted outside!

I certainly share your excitement when that first planting day finally arrives. First plantings of onions, peas, shallots, radish, Chinese cabbage are in. I’ll do some spinach soon, but there’s so much in the potager that wintered over wonderfully there’s no need now. Same with lettuces. I like your garden layout. If I were doing mine over, I’d do some longer beds like yours! Happy growing.
